Distributed counters example: Concurrent counters are as simple as incrementing the existing value by x; but in a distributed environment where network partitions and failures are normal operations, handling increments is a hard problem to solve. A timestamp is not enough to handle the failure cases. To overcome it, Cassandra handles the counters slightly differently than the normal writes. It is worth noticing that counters in Cassandra perform a read before write, which will cause additional load on Cassandra nodes.
